Call for applications: Research fellowship at the Sorbian Institute in 2027

The Sorbian Institute generally awards two to three fellowships each year for research stays of at least four weeks each. Funding is available for stays as part of research projects dealing with issues of (comparative) minority studies and/or the language, history and culture of the Lusatian Sorbs. The fellowships are aimed at both early-career and established researchers from Germany and abroad.

The funding comprises a one-off grant of 1,800 euros as a fixed sum, one-off coverage of travel costs to and from the Institute, and the provision of a workspace at the Sorbian Institute. In addition, the services of the Sorbian Cultural Archive and the Sorbian Central Library may be used free of charge.

Please enclose the following with your application:

  • letter of motivation explaining why a stay at the Sorbian Institute would be beneficial to your research project,
  • description of the research project, providing information on the current state of research, the objectives in terms of content and the work carried out to date (max. five pages),
  • personal details (academic background, list of publications),
  • university degree certificates,
  • details of your preferred dates for the research stay in the following calendar year.

Please send your application documents exclusively by email as a PDF file to the Sorbian Institute’s secretariat: si@serbski-institut.de.

The call for research fellowships is issued once a year. The deadline for submitting an application for the year 2027 is 31st of October 2026.
