“Sorbian Lusatia” – Space and Dreams of a national minority from 1918 until today

The Sorbian Institute in Bautzen is implementing a research project, funded by the Saxonian State Ministry of Sciences and Arts within the framework of the Humanities Program 2018-2020, with a focus on “1918 – key for change and initiation” (“1918 – Chiffre für Umbruch und Aufbruch”) from April 2018 until December 2020.
At the heart of the interdisciplinary project are the ideas, perceptions and imaginations of a Sorbian Lusatia, which became relevant in the course of the reorganization of Europe after 1918 and since then have been advanced by different actors, with different motives and different success during the 20th century. The project deals with the function as well as the effects that these ideas evolved from 1918 to the present, while especially focussing on “Nature” and (territorial) space. It asks to what extent objects of nature, natural areas, natural resources as well as a specific utilization of nature were incorporated into the conception of Sorbs as a national minority and what demands in dealing with nature and landscape resulted for the Sorbs? This research question is being worked on in the context of two subprojects, in order to connect the historical and the present perspective.
The project is based on theories and methods developed in the study of human-nature relationships (Environmental History, Political Ecology, Environmental Humanities). Conceptionally including use of historical-archival methods, discourse analyses, collective mapping and qualitative interviews.
